J&K war hero rues petty pension

Jammu | Dec 1
Captain Bana Singh's house in the border town of R S Pura is a sort of a mini museum of trophies and awards.
The lone Param Veer Chakra of the Jammu and Kashmir played an important role in capturing a post in the Siachen Glacier in 1987. The post was named after him.
But the army's highest honour earns him a princely pension of just 166 rupees a month. Just a fraction of what war heroes like him get even in other states.
Last year, he took up the issue with chief minister Azad, who set up a committee, which ordered the formation of a committee to look into the grievances of Bana Singh and other retired army men who allege that they are not given a fair treatment by the state government.
''The death is also looked at differently in different states. In Jammu and Kashmir it is seen in one way, but it is seen differently in Punjab. Future army jawans posted on the borders and fighting for the country will think nobody cares for them in Jammu and Kashmir,'' said Captain Bana Singh.
So don't our war heroes deserve better? The question was raised in the Parliament by Rajya Sabha member MS Gill.
. ''A cabinet committee to look into the grievances of the ex servicemen was constituted and that sub committee met once, but they have not finalized anything, now I am going to chair that sub committee myself,'' said Ghulam Nabi Azad, Chief Minister, Jammu & Kashmir.
The Entire nation is proud of captain Bana Singh, but he himself is not very happy, he hopes that Jammu Kashmir state government gives him the same respect and honour like other states give to their brave soldiers.
Central intervention
'Our soldiers need better treatment', said a statement made by the Defence Minister A K Antony himself, after reports about the sad plight of war heroes who are getting a pittance from the government made headlines recently.
AK Antony on Saturday said that the armed forces need better treatment and the government is pursuing the matter. The issue was also raised in Parliament.
