Jammu | Dec 1
Forget the past when the people in City of temples woke up with tongs of temple bells and enchanting of the Vedic mantras but it has now replaced with ear deafening sounds of crackers fired to scare away the monkeys that have now become the a real menace and the ‘masters of some pockets in the walled city.’
Jammuites yet have to reconcile from the shocking news headlines about the tragic death of the Deputy Municipal Chairperson News Delhi who was critically injured when attacked by some monkeys and a similar ‘monkey menace’ has become a real headache for the people of city of temples.
Some even recall the pain and sufferings of the Cherai victims of ‘nationally noticed Monkey Menace’ few kms away on NH-1A near Tikri in Udhampur. Yogesh Gupta of Purani Mandi said, “the monkeys really’ have become so commanding in certain pockets of the Jammu old city news as the news item appeared in ‘The Pioneer’ stated.’
‘These monkeys have become so daring that they don’t bother your presence but focus upon whatever they want tearing clothes hung on terrace, snatching anything from school going children who are often seen busy in morning shopping especially buying bread and butter etc, he said.
Thus we are left with no option but to fire crackers to scare away these unruly, mischievous and wayward monkeys, he added.
While Atul Pangotra a resident Raghunath Pura too shared the similar opinions and said that recently the monkeys who kept their regime confined to mainly in Mubarak Mandi and Purani Mandi areas now have shuttled in this area also. He also said the residents simply now feels how hard is the survival of the people in that little lush green Cherai village who were stopped from doing their daily chores forcing many to leave the village and also feared if the Jammuites would also feel the similar fate.
While conversation was on it was thunderous sound heard nearby that deafened all by standers in the lane of Raghunath Pura and all in one voice said, “they (monkeys) have come.’

Some alleged that the religious and mythological concepts too have exaggerated the ‘monkey menace’ and underlined that myths like feeding monkeys will clear them from some omens and bad stars have made the animals dependents on easy findings instead of finding eatables from their natural habitat.
Passengers and tourists are seen feeding monkeys on the both road networking on Jammu Srinagar highway and Jammu Poonch road. ‘At times these monkey surrounding your vehicle at some points on Nandini Road and above Tanda (Akhnoor) seemed to be reduced to beggars waiting outside a temple for a devotee to toss the coins, said Rakesh Malhotra with a bit musing but said this would not only disturb the ecological balance and also create health hazards. He also added that some health reports appeared in media section have pointed out increase of Tuberculosis and even rabies in such changing trends in natural habitats.
