| PUC directs SICOP to be competitive for self-reliance | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Dec 4 The Committee on Public Undertakings (PUC) of Legislative Assembly has directed the SICOP to evolve a well-knit mechanism to compete in the local market to improve revenue generation. The Committee opined that in present of era of competition SICOP should take necessary measures in this direction so that local traders other than government organizations should also make purchases through their outlets on competitive value. The PUC which met here today under the chairmanship of MLA Ch. Gharu Ram reviewed the overall functioning of SICOP and suggested various measures for sustenance and improvement in the revenue generation. The Committee also discussed audit paras of CAG's Report for the year 1997-98 pertaining to SICOP. To achieve the main objective for which the SICOP was established, the Committee maintained that the interests of Small Scale Industries should also be guarded and the agency should ensure that due share of production of SSI units is procured and this should be a mandatory on its part. In order to know the health of industry in the State, the Committee has decided to inspect some industrial units particularly small-scale units. The Committee would collect a data about the status of these units and facilities being provided by the State Government. While briefing the Committee about the performance of SICOP, Managing Director, SICOP Mr. B.S.Dua informed that presently the company is supplying material to government departments after levying minor service tax for the sustenance of the organization. He said that with the best efforts of the hardworking team of officials the SICOP is moving towards prosperity and earning profit. He said that company is observing the necessary guidelines issued by the government from time to time for the SSI units. Mr. Dua requested the Committee to use its good offices and approach the Central Government and para-military forces to request them to effect their at least 10 per cent purchases of goods through SICOP to provide succor to the local SSI units. Those present in the meeting included legislators, Mr. Sham Lal Sharma, Mr. Arvinder Singh, Mr. Zahoor Ahmed Mir, Syed Bashir Ahmed, Mr. Jugal Kishore Sharma, Deputy Accountant General, J&K, Director Accounts & Treasuries Mr. M.I.Khandey, Deputy Secretary Assembly Mr. M.R.Singh and other officers of SICOP. |
