Election of Shafi Pandit as National President YHAI hailed

Chairman Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission Mr Mohammad Shafi Pandit today called upon the youth fraternity to unite for prevailing global peace, which is also the need of hour. "Individual has to be at peace not only with himself but also with the society at large, then with the world and his environment", he said.
Pandit was addressing to a large gathering of representatives of Youth Hostels Association of India from various districts of Jammu, Kashmir and Laddakh apart from school children at Mubarak Mandi here today. The children were waving the flags of 85 countries where the Youth Hostel Association is functioning.
Earlier, Mr. Pandit was accorded a rousing reception at Jammu Airport where he arrived today after being elected unopposed as National President YHAI, in New Delhi by the representative of YHA hailing from every nook and corner of the state. Thereafter, they left for Mubarak Mandi where Mr. Pandit paid tributes to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi.
Pandit said that his election to the coveted post well not adversely affect his functioning as PSC Chairman as he has been associated with the movement from 1976. He said that the association which is a non political and social organization has been working for spreading the message of peace in the world besides bridging the gap between urban and rural youth. He advised the youth to work within the framework of constitution of India for creating a congenial environment to prevail peace and prosperity in the state.
S. P. Verma Chairman YHAI State Branch said that the election of Mr. Pandit as National President YHAI will go a long way in strengthening the youth Hostel Movement in the state. He recalled the contribution of Mr. Pandit as youth Hosteler and President YHAI and said that under his able guidance, Youth Hostelling movement in the state got tremendous encouragement and State branch was able to organize trip of Foreign delegates of more than 60 countries in the year 1998.
Youth Hostels Association International came into existence in the year 1909 in Germany with Richard Sharmon founder of the movement. In India its foundation was laid in the year 1949 when Pt Jawaharlal Nehru became First National President of the Association. Before the election of Mr Pandit this coveted post was held by the renowned personality Justice Chawla.
Shafi Pandit an IAS Officer of 1969 batch is known as a competent and outstanding, administrator having served J&K State and union government at various levels. As Deputy Commissioner in 1976, he initiated number of treks to explore beautiful Kishtwar, Marwan, Daxun Levvan, Simthan alongwith Dr H K Saxena, now President International Youth Hostels Federation. As Divisional Commissioner Kashmir he promoted trekking expedition to Phalgam, Sonamarg Zanskaur, Suru Valley in Kargil and Leh areas.
