Exercise at reconciliation between RSS and liberal Muslim leaders

Jammu | Dec 3
An exercise at reconciliation between Hindus and Muslims and to understand each other's view point on vital issues concerning the country has been initiated at the national level jointly by some Muslim leaders and the RSS. While the Muslim leaders, which include some religious preachers, through this exercise of mutual dialogue and debates, aim at projecting the real characteristics and essence of Islam, which preaches universal love, peace and brotherhood, in which there is no place for hatred against the members of other religious communities and least of violence to settle the contentious issues and disputes, the RSS, according to its spokesman aims at bringing the Muslim community in the Indian mainstream through mutual adjustments and accommodations and encouraging the humanitarian aspect of Islam against the fanatic, aggressive and violent manifestation of their religion. Through this exercise RSS also wants to reach to the Muslims and shelve the impression that the Hindu organization, which lays emphasis on unity among Hindus, in any way is anti Islamic or opposed to the Muslims as such.
With this objective in view an organization of nationalist enlightened Muslims, namely "Rashtrawadi Muslim Andolan" has been floated, with the blessings and active support of top brass of RSS, including its Chief K S Sudarshan. The founders of the organization among the Muslims as well as the representatives of the RSS, actively working to assist and facilitate the mission of the organization claim that already about two hundred units at district level in 14 states of the country have been setup, which has organized various programmes besides jointly celebrating the festivals of two communities.
Rashtrawadi Muslim Andolan formally setup its branch in Jammu on Sunday November 2, but with a different name, "Jammu Kashmir Nationalist Movement". Diwali-Eid-Milan was organized by the Movement, where it announced launching of its Jammu branch. On the occasion Nawab Shah Mohd. Suyeb Khan, who claims to be a descendent of the last Mughal ruler of India, Bahadur Shah Zafar, the hero of first war of independence against the British occupation, in 1857, Abdul Qyum Raja, President Anjuman-e-Farzandan-e-Hind and Dr. Mifti Mohd. Aslam Kasim from among the founder members of the movement and Girish Joyal, representative of the RSS were present and threw light on the objectives as well as the functioning of the movement. Although J&K chapter of the movement under a separate name "Jammu Kashmir Nationalist Movement" was formally launched in the function, yet its office bearers and members have not been announced. About 3 dozen opinion builders among the Muslim community from various walks of life besides about a dozen enlightened members of Hindu community were the audience to the addresses made by the visiting guests.
While the move of reconciliation and mutual understanding between the two major religious communities in the country is welcomed, yet it has to be seen as to how much sincerity and genuineness about the professed objectives is there and that the same again has not any political overtones. Some doubts about the genuineness of the exercise were conveyed in a subdued manner by some Muslim participants in the function to this correspondent. Even one of the main founder of the organization Nawab Shah Mohd. Suyeb Khan when asked by this correspondent about the involvement of RSS in the exercise and at what stage and under what circumstances idea of the movement was conceived, told that whereas there is realization in the RSS that their political outfit BJP cannot come to power, without the support of Muslims, on their part their only objective is to shelve the wrong impression about Islam and Muslims being a violent and non tolerant community, which has gained currency due to the misadventure of some members of their community indulging in terrorist activities. RSS shall have to do much more to convince the enlightened, liberal and forward looking sections among the Muslim community of their sincerity and genuineness in the exercise and the same not being a cosmetic or born out of some compulsion.
As far the representatives RSS has deputed from among its leadership and cadre in the movement, unfortunately they lack the credibility, particularly among the people of Jammu in view of their in the past having first hijacked the movement for Jammu statehood and then ditching and betraying the same.
This is not for the first time that RSS has taken in hand the exercise to have some sort of rapprochement and reconciliation with the leaders of Muslim community. In 1977, after the lifting of emergency in the country, on the advice of Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan, RSS had initiated a move and held broad discussions at various levels, to throw the doors of their activities open to the Muslims as well. But ultimately the move was shelved, While RSS shall have to give positive proof of its genuineness in the exercise, the same is definitely going to alarm the pseudo secular organizations like Congress leftists and many others, who have been using the Muslims as vote bank.
