PDP eyes youth for electoral fortunes

Jammu | Dec 3: In an innovative and smart political model, which if implemented can give many parties a run; the Peoples Democratic Party has reached out to the youth for expansion of its base irrespective of regional considerations which the party badly suffers.
A well researched document on enticing youth has come at a time when political parties are gearing up for elections and the PDP seems to be playing it well by attempting to take the youth on its side.
For its Kashmir centric policy, the Peoples Democratic Party could never gain currency in Jammu region despite the fact that a hoard of local leaders were decorated with important positions like a seat in Rajya Sabha, nominations to the legislative council, chairpersons and directors of various autonomous bodies and federations. These inductions could not have an impact on the general people in Jammu region as the party has always been seen as the one with purely Kashmir centric credentials.
The PDP patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today unveiled the youth development policy of his party which, at the face of it, has all the ingredients of an inclusive political approach. Besides many other things, the policy has envisaged creation of a youth opportunity fund and employment insurance for unemployed youth which can be a big hit with the youth.
"The State's youth must now be brought on the forefront of the change and innovation and PDP has taken a modest initiative on this direction," Mufti declared at the PDP's State level youth convention after unveiling the party's policy document "Youth Development Policy" here this morning. He said caught in the myriad of daily survival issues and short-term political strategies, there has been a complete lack of concern about what could be done to improve the lives and the life prospects of the State's young population. "I think the issues concerning the youth are not even on the agenda of any political party," he said and added it is in this context that PDP is coming forward with a comprehensive youth development policy that seeks to address the issues affecting the State's young people.
Mufti said PDP's youth policy is outlining the strategies that would provide the young people equal opportunities to maximize their potential. He said as the State is on the path of post-conflict socio-economic recovery, it is the right time to initiate the movement for youth empowerment on a massive scale. "While the State's young people have been particularly and devastatingly affected by the violent conflict, at the same time it has brought about changes in the social norms and opened up opportunities to renegotiate relations and hierarchies based on age and gender," he said and added that in the emerging scenario youth has to be necessarily singled out as a target group deserving specific attention as young population can be both a threat to peace and a force for peace.
Sayeed said PDP's Youth Development Policy envisions youth becoming the partners in creating a framework for developing and implementing successful programs, best suited for them and the society. He said the PDP's mission, as outlined in its policy, is to "Educate, Employ and Empower" the State's youth through a sustained process that will prepare them to meet the challenges of the future through a series of coordinated, progressive and focused activities. He said the process is aimed at helping the youth to become politically empowered, socially responsible, ethically aware and economically independent citizens.
