| Poonch festive, battle hardens | | | Nirbhay Jammual Poonch | Dec 3: As the electioneering picks up amidst chilling cold in this border constituency, the battle lines are getting clearer and deciding factors for the victory are being consolidated by the competing political parties. Despite a severe cold wave prevailing in this area, there is a political heat which has put not only the town but even the rural areas in a festive mode. As leaders of different political parties are descending from Jammu, hotels are packed to capacity and there is hardly any space available in the government accommodation. Jahangir Mir of the Congress, Ajaz Jaan of the National Conference and Yash Pal Sharma, a Congress rebel, are locked in a stiff triangular contest. "Never in the history of Poonch such a close and keen contest has been seen", said Mohinder Singh, a local contractor who supports Congress rebel Yash Pal. Hashim Khan, a village elder from Mandi says, "even though a young and inexperienced boy is in contest as a candidate of largest political party but it getting tough and keen as days pass off". Yash Pal Sharma is a stalwart; Jahangir Mir has the entire government behind him and Ajaz Jaan is riding on sympathy wave which makes the contest truly triangular and one of the most keenly contested. While many smaller groups and local units of national parties are indirectly supporting Yash Pal Sharma but much depended on Panther Party which had indicated to support Yash Pal Sharma. However, when Panthers Party opened its cards here today, things ran contrary to the expectations. The Panthers Party led by Bhim Singh held a meeting here today in which its decided to extend support to an independent candidate Ghulam Mohammad Tantrey. Tantrey was a government official and has recently resigned to contest the assembly elections. Prof. Bhim Singh announced that the Panthers Party shall support Tantrey. He appealed to the voters to support Tantre so that 60 years old monopoly of the Congress and National Conference is demolished once for all so that people of Poonch get liberation from exploitation and suppression. Prof. Bhim Singh said that the Panthers Party is looking for tomorrow where exploitation shall end and justice shall flow into every door in Jammu and Kashmir. He appealed the youth to come forward and join the Panthers Party movement to expose, oppose and finally depose the corrupt, criminal and communal leadership in the state. Meanwhile, the District Election Officer Poonch Mr. B. D. Sharma immediately after his joining today convened a District level meeting at Dak Banglow Poonch for introduction and review of the arrangement to conduct of Bye-Election of 87- Haveli Assembly Segment, Observer Expenditure.
