| Factional feuds force separatists to lose hold on militants in Kashmir | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | Dec 5:As a result of split after split separatist camps, operating in Jammu and Kashmir, seem to be tottering. The result is that they have started losing their grip not only on people but on militant groups. A stage has come when call for hartal from these separatist groups does not evoke as much response as it used to get till four years ago. The first setback the separatist camp received was when the Hurriyat Conference got split in two factions, one led by Molvi Umar Farooq and the other by Syed Ali Shah Geelani. The leaders of the two factions have turned as sworn enemies. Various separatist leaders and members of the Kashmir Bar Association too has tried to bring about unity in the Hurriyat camp but the moves failed because Mr Geelani remained obdurate. Even efforts made by Pakistan also failed. The split in the Hurriyat Conferende was followed by splits in the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF).At present there are four factions in the JKLF.One is headed by Mohd. Yasin Malik, the second by Javed Ahmed Mir, the third by Nanaji and the fourth owes allegiance to Amanullah Khan. The Peoples League has more than four factions. The APHC will have a ticklish issue to handle when Sheikh Aziz, who heads one faction of the Peoples’ League and had joined the Tehrik Hurriyat Conference, was said to be toying with the idea of rejoining the APHC. But one faction of the Peoples’ League is already a constituent of the APHC. Peoples’ Conference suffered a vertical split with the two brothers,Sajjad Lone and Bilal Lone heading two separate camps. The faction led by Bilal Lone is a constituent of the APHC.Similarly the Muslim Conference is a divided house and one faction headed by Prof. Abdul Gani Bhat is a constituent of the APHC. As a result of these splits and factional fights separatists trying to guide militant groups have failed to impose discipline. The result is that majority of militant groups were operating without any supervision or guidance of separatists. At one stage Syed Ali Shah Geelani was the sole separatist leader who wielded command over a couple of militant groups, including Hizbul Mujahideen. The scene stands changed after a number of separatist organizations parted company with Mr Geelani.Inside reports said that there is no ideological dispute among separarist bodies. These bodies have suffered splits over the dispute on money matters. |
