| Bhaderwah-Kailash Yatra—A step towards tourism promotion in the area | | Editorial | | Four day long Kailash yatra Festival, flagged off by Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad from Bhaderwah mark the promotion of this traditional yatra, with vast potential for Pilgrim tourism in Jammu region. The festival has been organized jointly by the J&K Tourism department and newly constituted Bhaderwah Development Authority. The demand for bringing traditional Kailash Yatra on the Pilgrim tourism map of the country was being made by the people of Bhaderwah, particularly those connected with this religious Yatra in one way or the other. It is heartening that the Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, who hails from Bhaderwah, has conceded this demand of the local people of Bhaderwah, who elected him to State Assembly recently with thumping majority. Bhaderwah, rather the entire Doda district, which includes Kishtwar as well as Bhaderwah, has vast potential for all sorts of tourism, as Pilgrimage, holiday tourism and adventure tourism. Bhaderwah popularly known as Chhota Kashmir, with Neeru stream flowing along is comparable to lidder valley of Phalgam. It has panorama of nature beauty spots, with wide landscapes, snow clad lofty mountain tops, over growing with pine and deodar trees giving fragrance to the air and making its climate salubrious. Besides the Pilgrimage of Kailash there are many other famous Hindu shrines in the area. Bhaderwah also abounds in Muslim shrines. Similarly Kishtwar, with vast plateau is comparable to Ghulmarg in Kashmir. A big stretch of land outside Kishtwar town grows Saffron, which is also grown in Pampore fields near Srinagar. The climate of Kishtwar is salubrious and healthy with fragrant breeze blowing all through. Unfortunately tourism potential of Bhaderwah and Kishtwar has not been explored and exploited to the desired extent. With militancy spreading in Kishtwar and Bhaderwah along with Kashmir whatever little tourism was developed in the region came to grinding hait. The setting up of Bhaderwah development authority and celebration of Bhaderwah-Kailash Yatra formally by the tourism department is the first step towards tourism development in the picturesque Valley of Bhaderwah. The important feature of this festival has been the visit of some tour and travel operators from outside the state, to witness the proceeding and participate in the same. They were specially invited by the J&K tourism department, to whom cultural bonanza of a part of Jammu region and its beautiful landscape has been exposed. This can go a long way to bring Bhaderwah on the tourism map of the country, provided these steps are continued. Ghulam Nabi Azad has been the first Chief Minister who has taken some concrete steps with all the earnestness to promote tourism in Jammu region, which has vast potential for the same. Besides Bhaderwah development authority and strengthening the already existing Patnitop development authority in the region many more tourism development authorities as well as tourist circuits have been created for development of these areas from tourism point of view. Even around about Jammu city and within the city itself tourism related projects have been taken in hand, which are expected to boost tourism in the region.
