Jammu | Dec 5: On the occasion of birth anniversary of the National Conference founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad not only kept his promise of attending a function in this connection but also promised a grant of Rs 10 millions for former Chief Minister's dream institution –the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS)
Today was the 25th annual day of SKIMS –founded by Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah as an institution close to his heart. This institute has long been managed by the first family National Conference through a Trust. Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad presided over the function at Srinagar despite bereavement in the family as hundreds of people were calling on him to condole the demise of his father-in-law.
However, shortly after taking over the reigns of government, the then Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed over threw the Trust management and brought the institution under full government control. Interestingly, on today's function, Sheikh Abdullah's daughter and Vice Chairperson of the Madre-Meharban Institute of Women and Child Welfare Mrs. Suraiya Abdullah shared dais with the Chief Minister.
On the occasion, the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today granted Rs. one crore for SKIMS for strengthening critical medicare discipline with latest equipment.
Expressing happiness to be present on the annual day function of SKIMS, Mr. Azad said "such functions provide opportunity for identifying the thrust areas to be attended and agenda to be drawn to register the desired progress in the light of the requirements. These functions should not be just rituals to perform but a forum to gauge the graph of progress and assimilate the viewpoints of cross section of people, experts and doctors of repute", he said.
Chief Minister said that SKIMS has emerged as referral centre for the whole state, however, he asked the management to scan through critically and ponder over whether the institution was fulfilling the purpose it has been established for 25 years earlier. "Let us work together to make this institute a modern medicare centre of par-excellence, providing an intellectual mileu, where the young medicos from various disciplines could achieve new strides and provide best treatment to the patients".
Azad emphasized the need for having a trauma centre, a modern neuro-sciences centre, a separate cardiac centre, a comprehensive transplant facility and a bio-technology centre in the institute.
Chief Minister said that two super-specialty hospitals were being set up at Jammu and Srinagar at a cost of Rs. 120 crore each. These would cater to the sophisticated medicare needs of the people.
