Srinagar | Dec 5:Kashmir Valley roads off-late has turned out to be death trap, with road accidents claiming more lives than violence, claims police authorities. On an average five persons die every day on roads in Kashmir.
Traffic authorities, whose moral responsibility is to manage the traffic so as to minimize accidents, shrub off their shoulders by blaming the lack of infrastructure with them, sordid condition of roads, mushrooming of two-wheelers and four-wheelers and lack of traffic sense in people as a reason for rise in road accidents in valley.
"This year we had more traffic accidents than last years. And on average five persons die in road accidents," said SP Traffic Abdul Hameed Bhat.
He informed that 1691 road accidents has occurred this year in valley and 203 people died in them. "Compared to this year only 1519 road had occurred last year in which 180 persons were killed," said Hameed adding more than 2444 persons were injured in the road accidents this year while as 2266 were injured in last year.
Another senior police official, on conditions of anonymity attributed the "toothless traffic laws" as a reason for increase in road accidents. "You can see more people are now dying in road accidents than due to violence. This is because traffic laws have turned out to be toothless, as law imposition is dictated by corruption and political influence in valley," he added.
World Health Organization (WHO) in its report revealed that 1.5 million people are killed in road accidents every year in world.
Blaming people for violating the traffic rules, SP traffic Kashmir added that his department had build bus stops in the city and on national highways for people to use, but added that no body bothers to use them.
"A standard for maximum speed for passenger and commercial has been set by us, but people don't fallow it," he said, adding that 40 to 50 kmph, is the standard set for vehicles.
