| NC demands immediate panchayat polls | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Dec 5 The Opposition National Conference today demanded immediate announcement of panchayat elections in Jammu and Kashmir saying the situation has improved in the state. Addressing party workers at 102nd birth anniversary of NC founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah at Naseembagh near here, party patron Farooq Abdullah said his party conducted the panchayat elections in the state in extreme conditions in 2002. "Now the situation has improved and the pancyayat polls should be held immediately to strengthen the democratic institutions at the grassroots level," he said. Abdullah said his party would soon announce the list of candidates for the assembly elections, scheduled next year. "NC will not wait for the announcement of elections to the state assembly and would be shortly announcing the list of the candidates for the elections," he said adding the party president Omar Abdullah and General Secretary Sheikh Nazir ahmed besides himself would finalize the list of candidates. Abdullah indicated that most of the candidates would be young saying we will try to give party mandate to honest and dedicated workers but most of them would be young who can climb mountains and have sincerity to protect the party flag. "This is being done to test the party workers. If anybody wants to leave the party he is welcome before the elections," he said. |
