| Poonch becomes modern Kurukhshetra | | | Nirbhay Jammual Jammu | Dec 5 Over 20 legislators, half dozen Ministers campaigning Life out of gear, VIPs keep administration on toes Omar skips grandpa's b'day to campaign in Poonch 8 legislators, MP address NC rally in Mandi Caste considerations overshadow development issues Battle of prestige between Congress, NC Security on high alert, militants reportedly active Azad, Farooq to address mega rallies Poonch, Dec 6: The upcoming by-election in the Poonch-Haveli constituency will go in annals of political history of Jammu and Kashmir as most prestigious and tough contest between two leading political parties. The battle is now more between the candidates as it is a straight contest between the top brass of the National Conference and Congress. Apparently an unprecedented insecurity is prevailing among the parties as the polling dates draw near. Today more than 20 legislators including over half a dozen ministers were roaming around Poonch lobbying for the candidates of their respective parties. Interestingly, unlike the usual elections where contestants undergo a battle of nerves during the campaign period of 15 days, in Poonch the contestants of Congress and the Conference seem relaxed and composed as their parties are battling it out for them. On the contrary a huge nervousness is prevailing among the top leaders of the party who consider victory or defeat in this election as an indication of prospects in the forthcoming general assembly elections across the state. While Congress Ministers and legislators are already camping here, the National Conference president Omar Abdullah today skipped the birth anniversary function of his grandfather Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah to address the public rallies here. The NC patron Dr Farooq Abdullah will be coming to address rallies in next few days, said the party sources. During his Poonch constituency tour, Omar was accompanied by as many as eight legislators and one former Member of Parliament. Along with him the public meeting was also addressed by Mian Altaf, Mushtaq Bukhari, Javed Rana, Choudhary Bashir Ahmed Naz, M R Qureshi, K Rashpal Singh, T.S. Wazir, Devender Singh Rana –all legislators and Choudhary Talib Hussian –former Member of Parliament. The leaders of Congress party are already camping here with more than ten legislators including the Ministers. Both parties are taking care of a fair balance of Gujjar and Pahari leaders during their public presence as the ethnic and caste factor is overshadowing the issues of development. Addressing the public meeting at Mandi, Omar said "we believe in equitable development of all the three regions, community and caste", he said adding; "We never tried to fragment people in society for political gains". Asking the people to reject all such political parties, Omar said, "Those who are trying to divide the society for petty political gains are destroying the fabric of Jammu and Kashmir". He added that attempt was being made to create wedge among the people on communal and community lines, which can have dangerous consequences. "NC is the only party which always stood for secularism, development and brotherhood". |
