| Security forces drive out insurgents from villages | | | Somtal | Dec 7: Security forces have driven out insurgents of Manipur People's Army (MPA) from many villages in interior Chandel district bordering Myanmar, according to a senior army officer. Brig Raymond Noronha, in-charge of the 'Operation Somtal Two' to clear the area of insurgents told a group of visiting journalists that the army and Assam rifles personnel had so far flushed out insurgents from old Somtal, Hollenjang, Changjal, Sehlon and some other nearby villages. He said seventy percent of the current counter- insurgency operations launched since November middle under code named 'Operation Somtal Two' was completed and security forces would be able to drive out the insurgents of MPA, armed wing of United National Liberation Front (UNLF), from border areas by Christmas next. Brig Noronha said the operations had been launched under the command of headquarters 3 corps and headquarters inspector general of Assam rifles (south) involving 44th Assam rifles, 6th Assam rifles and 10th Jammu and Kashmir light infantry battalions. He said security forces did not encounter major obstacles or any serious resistance in their march to control the areas earlier dominated by the insurgents adding that six Assam rifles and army personnel suffered injuries in the explosion of Improvised Explosive Devices (IED). The army official said so far four cadres of the MPA were killed in two encounters with the security forces and added that the two sides have been exchanging mortar firing. |
