| Governor says low, but will be improved soon | | Annuity to Gallantry award winners | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Dec 7 : Governor, (Retd) Lt-Gen S.K.Sinha, on Friday said that he hoped that the cabinet subcommittee, set up by Chief Minister, Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad, will recommend a hike in the annuity given to the gallantry award winners in Jammu and Kashmir. Sinha told a group of media men that he had taken up the issue of poor annuity to the gallantry award winners with the state Government. He said “we need to do more for these gallantry award winners and ex-servicemen in the light of sacrifices they had rendered in safeguarding the country’s borders and these servicemen continue to play a vital role in the ongoing militancy related violence.” He said though “ours is a poor state, the Government should be generous towards the gallantry award winners and exservicemen.”In reply to a question he said “I do not think any danger of ceasefire breaking notwithstanding some minor incidents of firing.”He said the ceasefire was holding for the last four years and “I do not think we need to worry unduly about it.” In reply to another question he said that Pakistan was going through turmoil. ”What is happening in Pakistan is difficult to predict.” Mr Sinha said that “usually before winter sets in the level of infiltration from across the LOC increases. This year also there is marginal increase in the level of infiltration and we have been affectively dealing with it. However, if we compared the existing situation with the past the situation is well under control and improving,”adding that the level of infiltration and violence has gone down. In support of his claim the Governor said that when he took over as the constitutional head of the state in 2003 the state used to witness 10 killings a day which had come down to two per day.He said we are prepared to handle the situation and have enough capability to deal with it.On the question of recent change of guard in Pakistan where a former ISI chief has taken the command of Pak army,Governor said I will not comment on it saying that it is their internal matter. He said no matter who is at the helm of affairs in Pakistan we will continue to deal with them as neighbour without compromising our own country’s security. |
