| Exhibition on non-conventional energy resources to mark Rajiv Gandhi’s Akshay Urja Diwas | | | Srinagar, August 22 – Minister for Science and Technology Mr. Taj Mohi-Ud-Din inaugurated the one-day exhibition on non-conventional energy resources in connection with observance of Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urja Diwas at SKICC here today. The function was organized by the Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Government of India to create awareness among general public about the use of new and renewable sources of energy. On this occasion, the Minister said that the Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy has so far distributed 5500 solar lanterns among people of remote areas of Gurez and Karnah tehsils where the hamlets have not been electrified. He said that under Border Area Development programme during the year 2004-2005, 3672 solar lanterns were distributed among the people. He said that under this programme 2600 solar lanterns will be provided to the beneficiaries during the current financial year. He said that 8297 solar home-lights have been distributed among the beneficiaries of remote areas of Doda and Kupwara districts under remote village electrification programme. He said that under this programme 1200 solar home lights against 1706 have been installed in the un-electrified villages of Doda district, while as 2000 solar lights against target of 2100 have been installed in district Kupwara. Mr. Taj disclosed that under Prime Minister’s Re-construction Programme 435 Micro Hydle projects of 3.5 KW capacity each are being installed by the Army authority in the State. On this occasion cycle-race, easy competition and symposia were held by the students to mark the day.
