| Pak court grants bail to Nawaz Sharif's brother | | | Lahore | Dec 8 An anti-terrorism court here extended, till December 18, the interim bail granted to former Pakistan premier Nawaz Sharif's brother Shahbaz in a case related to his alleged involvement in the extra-judicial killing of five students in 1998. The court extended the "pre-arrest" bail for Shahbaz, which expired on Saturday, on payment of a bond of Rs 50,000, his lawyer said. During the next hearing, Shahbaz will ask the court to exempt him from appearing as he is engaged in campaigning for the PML-N party ahead of the parliamentary polls, the lawyer told reporters. Scores of PML-N supporters gathered outside the court during the hearing. They waved the party's green flags and shouted slogans in support of their leaders. The court, which had earlier ordered Shahbaz's arrest for failing to appear before it, had granted him bail on Thursday. Shahbaz had said that he was unable to appear because he was sent to Jeddah, in Saudi Arabia, by "deception". The court had, on December 3, issued notices to Lahore's police chief and another officers for not arresting Shahbaz. The notices were issued in response to a contempt application that said the officers were not obeying the order to arrest Shahbaz, who was declared a proclaimed offender in the case. A case was registered against Shahbaz in January 2001 by the father of one of the five students who were allegedly killed in a fake gun battle with police in the Sabza Zar area of Lahore in 1998. Shahbaz, who was then chief minister of Punjab province, was accused of ordering the killing of the youths. Shahbaz's nomination papers for the January 8 general election were rejected last week for his alleged involvement in the killing. |
