| Suman, Sumit, Kamlesh shine on opening day of State Athletics | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Dec 7: Districts of Udhampur, Jammu and Samba today opened their accounts with a gold medal each on the inaugural day of the annual state level inter-district athletics meet organized by the Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) at University of Jammu grounds, here. While Suman Devi won gold for Udhampur in Long Jump, Sumit Kour was gold winner from district Jammu in Shot Put event. For district Samba it was Kamlesh Kumari who opened the account winning the 600 mts race. To begin with the organising committee is holding competitions in under-14 girls section. Earlier, the state level inter-district athletics meet was declared open by Commissioner Secretary Higher Education, Parmod Jain in a well attended function at the University of Jammu grounds, here. He lauded the efforts of the Department for organizing such a big event and also encouraged the participants who have come from all corners of the state for the championship. The Commissioner Secretary said that government is committed to provide all possible assistance for the promotion sports and related activities. Earlier, in his welcome address, Assistant Director Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) Ashok Kumar presented a summary of report with regard to the mega event. He said that the athletics meet is being organised in a phased manners and it will take the organisnig committee over 20 days to complete the end on December 31st. “It will be through this meet that the Department shall pick up the probable for the forthcoming National School Games scheduled for January next,” Ashok Kumar told Sports & Allied News. In all athletics from 12 districts of the state are taking part in various track and field events in different age groups of under-14, under-17 and under-19 in both boys and girls sections. Later, Deputy Director DYSS, G M Dar presented vote of thanks. Earlier, students from Girls Higher Secondary School Mubarak Mandi presented dogri folk dance which was followed by cultural items by students of New Era Public School and DBN School.
