Srinagar | Dec 8
As the entire valley is engulfed in cold breeze, after snowfall in the upper reaches, normal life is getting disrupted. People rush towards their homes much early, by curtailing their working hours.
And amid chilly atmosphere, the camp fires at frequent places offer a lovely scene, for late night walkers.
From last few days there has been a decline in the normal temperature, which has added harshness in weather, MET officials said.
And with dipping temperature, valleyites are getting alerted and preparations for the freezing winter have already begun. Women along the roadsides or in plains would be seen manufacturing coal by burning dried Chinar leaves. Sales of Kangri (Kashmiri fire pot) have gone up considerably. Woolen wears too are receiving brisk sale.
"Because of the increasing chill I have to make arrangements for the coming weather much early this season than previous winters," says Mahajabeena Shamus a housewife from Baramuula, who along with he kids was purchasing woolen-ware and other necessary items for snowy weather in Lal Chowk today .
In Srinagar and its adjoining areas strong cold winds blowing uninterruptedly has forced the inhabitants here to cover themselves with the heavy woolens. People are seen dressed in colorful jackets and warm coats with mufflers snaked their necks for escaping coldness.
In rural areas people wearing Pherans with a heated coal filled Kangri are seen mostly sitting in the roadsides, giving an indication that winter has finally set in. But for the firewood collectors in the forests the snowfall in the upper reaches has annoyed them a lot, as it hinders their business. In Damah Hanjipora and Pahalgam, people especially woman are very sad. "It is very bad for us. Because of this snow we have to wind up our business much early this year," said Hassena Begum of Pahalgam who is a head of women collecting firewood from the nearby forests.
