Rs.132 cr project to develop Ravi on modern lines: Qazi

KATHUA, AUGUST 22: As a sequel to Coalition Government’s move of steering Jammu and Kashmir towards a progressive and prosperous state, a comprehensive Rs.132 crore project has been approved for the development of Ravi Tawi cannal.
This was state by Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control Mr. Qazi Mohammad Afzal during his visit to various areas in Kathua district here today.
During his visit, the Minister inspected several developmental projects under execution in the district including Ravi Tawi Canal, Lift Irrigation Lakhanpur, Basant Lift Irrigation Station, Ujh Barrage and Ravi Canal down stream.
Issuing various directions to Kathua PHE Division authorities the Minister said that Coalition Government is committed to provide adequate drinking water facilities to the people in every nook and corner of the state. He said that the irrigation and flood control are the priority sectors of the government. He said works like desilting and repairing of canals and channels including construction of check dams etc. have been taken up for execution which yielded fruitful results. He also said that many projects and schemes for strengthening the irrigation and drinking water facilities are under active consideration of the present government under ARWSP and National Renewal Mission to eliminate scarcity of drinking water and boost agriculture production in the state.
Mr. Afzal was informed that the Basant Irrigation Lift Station is designed for 500 cusec discharge capacity through operation of 5 pump sets of 100 cusec each. At present, 200 cusec is being pumped besides ten pump stations would be proposed to be replaced under Border Area Development Programme (BADP) for which Rs.5 crore have been earmarked.
Enroute, several deputations met the Minister during his visit and apprised him of their grievance. He assured them that their genuine demands would be solved in a phased manner.
Among others, Commissioner/Secretary, PHE and Irrigation, Mr. Mehboob Iqbal, Deputy Commissioner Kathua Mrs. Sarita Chouhan, Chief Engineer Ravi Tawi Mr. Govind Ram, Superintending Engineer PHE & Irrigation Jammu Mr. V. K. Abrol, General Secretary PDP Mr. Romesh Motton and District President PDP Kathua Mr. Gooru Prashad accompanied the Minister.
