| Hajj pilgrimage: 647 carried today | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | Dec 9: With only three days to conclude the regular Hajji Flight schedule from Srinagar to Saudi Arabia, the state government is carrying pilgrims on war footing basis, so as to meet the rush of stranded Hajjis. As additional flight has been put to work from yesterday, 647 pilgrims were carried by three special flights from Srinagar airport to Jiddah. Giving details, Hajj officer Abdul Rashid Mir said that the playing of an additional flight from yesterday has helped them to carry maximum stranded pilgrims. "We have rescheduled the whole schedule of Hajjis, and now we could be delaying the previous schedule by only one day. That is December 13 would be the concluding day of hajj flight schedule instead of December 12," he added. He added that today's first flight carried 261 Pilgrims, comprising of 137 males and 79 females while second flight also carried 216 passengers comprising 139 Males and 77 females. The third flight for Jeddah carried 215 pilgrims. The hajj flight schedule was badly disrupted this year, due to heavy fog and zero visibility in the Srinagar airport. With the result more than nine flights had to cancel since the commencement of the hajj flights from November 11. And, to meet the exigency chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad urged the union civil aviation minister Praful Patal and defence minister A. K. Antony to arrange additional flights. CM reacted quickly to the complaints of the stranded pilgrims, who had alleged that the prevailing crisis might have been avoided if the government had discussed the matter with the union civil aviation and defence ministries regarding the poor visibility in the months of November and December at the Srinagar airport. When departure of pilgrims has started the government is thinking of an alternative. "We took the issue extra serious and arranged additional flights to meet the crisis," said Divisional commissioner Kashmir, Mehboob Iqbal. |
