| Dogras, Gujjars asked to boycott ‘Kashir Channel’ | | ‘Cultural invasion won’t be tolerated’ : say Lalit, Rahi | | Early Times Reporter
Jammu | Dec 9 Vehemently condemning the cultural invasion, two premier organizations, working for the identity of Dogras and Gujjars of Jammu and Kashmir, have in a nation wide appeal urged the members of both the ethnic groups to boycott Kashir Channel of Doordarshan for what they called the ‘cultural aggression’ inflicted by the Channel’.
In a joint statement Prof. Lalit Magotra, President, Dogri Sanstha, J&K, and Dr. Javaid Rahi, National Secretary of Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation have vehemently condemn and oppose the Cultural invasion unleashed on Dogras and Gujjars by the Kashir Channel of Doordarshan. They alleged that Kashir Channel is in no way the representative Channel of all communities and tribes of J&K State.
Prof. Lalit Magotra said the "Kashir Channel’ has not only failed in meeting the aspiration and expectations of the people of Jammu region as well as the Tribals residing in border belts of Kashmir Valley, it has also failed in its much publicized aim of countering the false and malicious propaganda of the Channels from across the International borders.
Prof Mangotra further said it is astonishing that as per the official notification of Prasar Bharati, Dogri and Gojri have been given two per cent representation each in its 24x7 telecast of DD Kashir Channel and this is humiliating even this meager representation is also not being given to Dogri and Gojri
Dr. Javaid Rahi said that the programs telecast from Kashir Channel are not in languages which are understood by the more than 50% Dogra and Gujjar population of the State and 95% population across the LOC and International border adding the predominant languages of these areas being Gojri, Dogri, Punjabi and certainly not the language of Kashir Channel. Therefore, the programs telecast by Kashir Channel have absolutely no impact on masses on either side of the border, he remarked
Dr. Rahi stated that some agencies are trying to thrust alien culture upon us under pre planned conspiracy and warned that cultural monopoly against Gujjars of the state would not be tolerated. He asked how do the authorities perceive to integrate these communities in the mainstream when they are being deprived of their genuine rights at every fora and even the two percent representation to Gojri language in Kashir Channel’ is not being adhered to.
The Channel was launched in 1999 by the Union Government with the dual objectives to promote and propagate culture and traditions of the inhabitants of the State and to counter the campaign of misinformation from across the LOC and the International border. But the channel has singularly failed in both its objectives, they said
The channel for which the Centre has allocated more than Rs 299.87 crore does not telecast even a single programme in Gojri in its 24X7 telecasts and did not cover remote villages and tribal population of the State in their own mother tongue which is most affected by militancy. It therefore fails to counter the massive anti-India propaganda launched by Pakistan Television (PTV) through its powerful transmitters along the border. Dr. Rahi alleged.
Both, Prof Lalit Magotra and Dr. Javaid Rahi said that Dogras and Gujjars who constitute more than 60% population of the State are thus completely ignored by the Kashir Channel and no representation is given to their Art, Culture, Languages, Customs and Secular ethos for which they are known world over. As a matter of fact, Gujjars and Dogras living in the higher reaches of the mountainous region of the State are the worst sufferers of militancy. Instead of catering to the aspirations and expectations of these communities, DD Kashir Channel is rubbing salt in their wounds by imposing programs on alien Culture in a language which these communities do not understand.
In spite of numerous appeals and protests by various sections of Dogra and Gujjar communities the alien culture onslaught on our culture and languages is continuing unabatedly through DD Kashir Channel. This is another case of the insensitive manner in which the affairs of the Jammu and Kashmir are being handled. Peaceful and secular Dogra and Gujjar communities are being unnecessarily provocated by creating resentment among them. Dr. Mangotra alleged. |
