Congress yet to find an effective leader for heading the PCC
8/22/2006 9:06:21 PM
Jammu, August 22:-Chief Minister,Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad, has not been in a position to find “a young ,tough and effective” leader for heading the Pradesh Congress Committee.
The idea had been suggested to the Chief Minister by the AICC leadership as it found that Peerzada Mohd.Sayed, being a gentleman, had not bee able to infuse discipline in the congress cadre resulting in factionalism within the organization. The AICC leaders also wanted one man for one post so that a new PCC Chief could devote full time to the restrengthening of the party.
At one stage, Taj Mohiuddin,a cabinet Minister, was sounded for the PCC Chief’s post but he declined the offer saying “he was not prepared to give up the ministerial post.”
As a result of weak PCC leadership the Congress could not cash on the cabinet decision on the creation of eight new districts and 13 tehsils.Instead the PDP leadership took advantage of the Congress laxity and during its tour in various areas it tried to convince the people that its commitment to them on creation of new districts had been fulfilled.
And from the Congress side it was left to the Chief Minister to speak on the achievements of the coalition rule which included its commitment of going beyond the Wazir Committee report.
Reports said that the state unit of the Congress has been placed in an awkward situation with PDP leadership raking up issues, including end to human rights violations, which do not suit the interests of the party. In fact the Congress has been forced to play a second fiddle to the PDP.
A senior Congress leader said that “we have instructions not to upset the present political arrangement.”He said that since Mufti Mohd.Sayeed was in the forefront of those leaders who had been assigned the task of mending fences with Pakistan and Kashmiri separatists it could prove against the national interest if the Congress snapped ties with him and his party at the present moment.
At the same time the leaders of the state unit of the Congress, particularly the Chief Minister; have been asked to initiate measures for infusing life to the organization. It is in this context the congress leadership has avoided taking cudgels with PDP Chief,Ms Mehbooba Mufti, on her speeches and statements on highly sensitive issues, including human rights violations.
