Jammu | Dec 10: After 15 months of wilderness, senior Peoples Democratic Party leader Muzaffar Hussain Baig was today sworn as a cabinet minister in the coalition minister and designated as Deputy Chief Minister.
Governor Lt Gen SK Sinha administered him the oath of office and secrecy at a brief ceremony in the Raj Bhawan lawns this morning which was attended by Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, his predecessor Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, Ministers, legislators and bureaucrats.
With Baig's reinduction, the strength of the council of ministers in the Congress-led coalition government has risen to 22. The number of cabinet ministers has risen to 14 after his reinduction. There are also eight ministers of state in the present government.
Baig had resigned on September 3, 2006 after PDP recalled him from the Azad's cabinet.
Later talking to reporters, Baid said that implementing Common minimum program, accelerating the process of development in the state and strengthening the bonds of coalition will figure high on the priority list of his agenda. He said, if both the coalition partners will work together according to the common minimum programme the chances of electoral performance will be enhanced. "Naturally the prospects of coalition will improve in the assembly polls if we worked together", he added. Sharing his first thoughts on being reinducted in the cabinet,Baig said "I am small humble person and I have to play a humble role in the process and consolidate coalition. On differences with PDP and within the alliance partners Baig said misunderstanding between him and party leadership was the reason when he was recalled. He said all issues between CONG-PDP will be amicably settled soon. On the other hand when Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad was approached for his comments on the reshuffle and misunderstanding within the coalition partners he refused to acknowledge the same and smilingly said, when there was no misunderstanding question of resolving it does not arise. He said that reshuffle of the portfolios would be done after bye-elections of Poonch assembly constituency scheduled on December 12.Azad, however, declined to comment over the induction of Congress MLAs as ministers in the government. On delay caused in carrying out expansion Azad said PDP never asked for it earlier.I have been telling them not to link the issue of cabinet expansion with the congress quota.I had informed them if they had some vacancy they should have filled it earlier.
