| Junior cricketers create history as U-19 team enters semis | | | Sanjeev Sharma Jammu | Dec 17: The junior cricketers have salvaged pride for the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) especially in the wake of dismal performance in other groups, particularly the Ranji Trophy, by creating history of reaching the knock-out stage of semi-finals in the Cooch Behar under-19 cricket tournament holding Uttar Pradesh to a draw in the fifth and last Plate Group-B league match played at GGM Science College here today. Today’s draw helped J&K improve their tally to 19 points in the ongoing season adding three points from the drawn game against UP. The group topper Uttar Pradesh earned 20 points including just one out of today’s this game. Now, in the knock-out stage of semi-finals, J&K shall take on Rajasthan on December 24 at Kanpur while Uttar Pradesh shall meet Madhya Pradesh. Both Rajasthan and MP have made it into the semifinals from Plate Group-A. “We are proud of the boys who have really done something memorable for J&K cricket which is striving for its existence. I’m sure the milestone achieved by these junior cricketers would go a long way in helping the game of cricket to revive and survive,” one of the four selectors of the under-19 team, Des Rattan Dubey told SAN. What J&K has achieved today was due to two reasons. Firstly, great coordination and understanding of each other among seven boys who have been playing together for the last five years from under-15 to under-17 and then under-19 group (Ram Dayal, Mohd Muddassir, Adil Rishi, Manik Gupta, Pervez Rasool, Nitish Sharma and Aditya Pratap). Secondly, the mutual understanding among the coach (Shivan Lal Trakroo), manager (AH Kazmi) and physio (Fayaz Ahmed), who gave a free hand to the boys to perform and excel. Earlier, Uttar Pradesh, resumed their innings from overnight score of 107 for three and declared their innings on 237 for nine in 111.4 overs. The fifth wicket partnership between Ankit Tiwari (52) and Umang Sharma (62) yield 106 runs. Ram Dayal and Mohd Muddassir shared three wickets each from J&K. In their second innings, J&K waited till Adil Rishi could complete his half century to ask the umpires to call it a day at 60 without loss in 10.2 overs. Adil took just 37 deliveries to make 52 runs studded with two sixes and six boundaries. Imran Haroon made unbeaten 8.
