| Welcomed formation of five working groups on Kashmir | | | The nomination of heads of five working groups on J&K, after their consent is obtained, is an other milestone in the overall steps being taken to address the grievances of various sections of the people and remove their alienation as well as to give better governance to the people. The formation of these five groups was decided in the second Round Table Conference held at Srinagar on 24-25 May, preceded over by the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh. The men of caliber and integrity, in different fields, have been appointed as the heads of the working groups by the approval of the Prime Minister as well as the state Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad. The other members of the committees will be appointed in due course of time, most of whom will be from out of the legislators, prominent members of political parties and experts in various other fields from within the country. The overall objective is to evolve a mechanism for giving better governance to the people and to ensure that the development projects are implemented honestly and that there is no scope for pilferation in the funds allocated for the implementation of various projects, aimed at improving the economy of the state and administer justice to the people. One of the groups will also deal with the means to be evolved to bring closer the peoples in two parts of the state, viz. one under Pak occupation and other under Indian administration. This group will also see how the trade between the two parts can be promoted. Similarly another group will also review the relationship between the state and the Centre and if need be devolution of more powers to the state. However the most important working group constituted will look into evolving mechanism for giving clean and better governance to the people in the state. Infact the root cause of all the maladies with which the people in the state are suffering has been the mal-administration for last 58 years. There is dire need for giving the people a good and highly responsive administration, which is free of corruption, nepotism and favouritism. If people get justice and the responsive government immediately addresses to their grouse and removes their alienation, it will go a long way in emotionally integrating the people of Kashmir with the rest of the country. Happily politicians of all hues as well as other enlightened people have by and large welcomed this development. The hard core secessionist leader, Sayeed Ali Shah Geelani has, however, opposed and criticized the formation of these groups, terming the step as an attempt at hoodwinking the people and detracting their attention from the real issue of getting rid of Indian occupation. His opposition to the formation of these groups can be understood, since he is out and out anti-India and stands for dismemberment of J&K from India. Hence any step taken which addresses the grievances of the people and diffuses the tension which leads to their alienation from the national mainstream, does not fit in his scheme of things. But the opposition to the formation of these groups and these being headed by men of high caliber in the country, by the BJP can hardly be appreciated. The BJP should have rather welcomed this development, since it aims at finding out the ways and means to give the people a better and responsive government and to remove their alienation |
