| Are HR violation slogans just to draw limelight? | | | Sanjay Khajuria Jammu | Dec 19 Time and again there had been rattling from various political parties and other champions of Human Rights about the demilitarization, disbanding SOG and repeal AFSPA (Armed Forces Special Powers Act) to stop rights abuse’. At the same time this section of human rights champions adopts Nelson’s’ Eye approach towards those who unleashed the terror regime. Recently, State Human Right Commission’s new chief hit the media sections demanding teeth for the commission to tame the troops. In a news item appeared in a media section on December 11, the new chairperson of State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) Wajahat Habibullah demanded withdrawal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from the state and sought more powers to act against the troops accused of human rights violations. According to him Human rights violations by Army and paramilitary forces like CRPF posted in the state can only be stopped when they are tamed and made accountable. “But what about the victims of the militancy had they ever bothered about the maimed and battered people the victim of bomb blasts and the firing and making them accountable, asks Sanjeev Pandit a resident of Jammu acrimoniously. Rakesh Kumar a government teacher simply questions if the prestige chair has made the new chairperson to forget the physical and mental pain afflicted to Mariyam who nose and ears have been chopped and was raped for many days. Further he questioned perhaps these people might have forget the chopping nose and ears of two Gujjars in Rajouri-Poonch and killing of innocent in high reaches of Doda-Udhampur-Rajouri-Pooonch. These are only stray incidents to count but there are many uncountable incidents where even these champions of HR failed to utter a single word. It needs to mention that even the European Union Group in its reports on October 2 2007 has titled that ‘Militancy in J-K turning into lucrative business.’ According to a reputed news agency the European group monitoring Jammu and Kashmir has described militancy in J&K had turned into a lucrative business in the state with criminals taking advantage of the troubled situation were indulging in extortion and abduction in the name of the so-called movement. The Belgian Association for Solidarity with Jammu and Kashmir headed by Association President Paul Beersmans, in its recent report, has said criminals were taking advantage of the troubled situation in the state. "They are abducting people for money, raping, murdering, extorting money from businessperson, using mafia practices under the movement. Militancy is a lucrative industry," the report, submitted to the European Union and the United Nations during the recent session of the sub-commission on human rights, said. State president BJP Ashok Khajuria (Ex MLA) talking to Early Times told that since the UPA Govt had taken over the nationalistic forces have been discouraged against the anti national forces. Khajuria questioned how can so called proponents of human rights forget the sacrifices of Muslims and Hindus who were brutally killed during militancy. At the same he alleged that both Congress led UPA Govt at centre and in the state are only encouraging the forces that are hell bent to distance the Jammu and Kashmir from the Indian Sovereign. |
