| '20 major Indian cities would be covered by CNG by 2010' | | | Coimbatore | Dec 21 Twenty major cities of the country would be covered by CNG by 2010, a senior official in the ministry of petroleum and natural gas said on Friday. This would cover nearly 45 to 48 per cent of the vehicle population of India, M S Srinivasan, secretary, ministry of petroleum and natural gas, told reporters here. Besides, towns and areas coming under 3,400 KM stretch of Krishna-Godavari basin would be brought under CNG by the next 36 months, Srinivasan, here to inaugurate Indian Oil Corporation's first automobile LPG Dispensing station in the city, said. He said that the government wanted to keep the environment clean and once all the vehicles were attuned to utilise CNG, the country would be totally pollution free. On the impact of increase of crude oil prices on petroleum product prices here, he said that oil sector in the country was estimated to register an underrecovery of Rs 75,000 crore this year. As against the estimate of Rs 56,000 crore, the underrecovery was registered at Rs 49,000 crore last year, which were as good as loss to the companies, he said. On the reported diversion of domestic gas and also the delay and restrictions by the dealers in providing refill, Srinivasan said that oil companies should be vigilant on the issue. State governments can initiate action against the erring dealers under Essential Commodities and Maintenance Act, he suggested. It was easy to notice the mischief by the dealers, as on a average, a household consumed 10 to 11 cylinders a year and the increased intake could be monitored, Srinivasan said. |
