‘Natrang honours young music maestro’
Mayank future of Indian Classical Music: Balwant Thakur

THE YOUNG music maestro, Mayank Raina, was honoured at a function organized at the Natrang Studio Theatre here today.
While honouring the music maestro, Natrang Director, Balwant Thakur, described him as ‘the future of Indian Classical Music’, adding that Raina is one of the most outstanding young talents in the field of instrumental music, which the people of the state are not aware. He said Natrang will go out of way to encourage such artists who have the spark and talent to take the name of Jammu and Kashmir to international heights.
Born in a family of renowned artist, music runs in the blood of Mayank Raina. He started learning music under the tutelage of his grandfather Pt. Omkar Nath Raina, the most reputed and honoured ‘Sitarist’ of the State at an early age of four years. Raina exhibited symptoms and signs of possessing talent for music, which prompted his grandfather to take him in charge. His father, Sunil Raina, well known musician carried forward the work of his father in guiding the child. It was only at the early age of 11 years, that he undoubtedly appearing to be putting in some extra effort in handling a Sitar larger than his size earned a great applause all over. His reputation as young , brilliant and great artist, with promise of rising to eminence, is ever growing. He is equally proficient in playing Tabla, Harmonium, Flute, Synthesizer, Guitar and Congo, and has earned numerous awards, certificates, prizes and medals, besides winning spontaneous applause from the witnessing crowds wherever he performed. He is also the recipient of Cultural Talent Scholarship by the Union Cultural Resource and Trainings New Delhi and has also won the Ist. prize in Sitar recital at the world famous ‘Shri Baba Harballabh Sangeet Sammellen, 2006.
The honouring function was followed by a Sitar recital by Mayank Raina, who mesmerized the audience with his magical notes. He was accompanied on Tabla by a very senior artist Prashotam Lal.
The prominent among those who attended the function included O N Raina, N K Sharma, Kanwar Santosh Singh, Dr. MK Raina, Renu Sehgal and ML Raina.
