| CITU expresses concern over exploitation of railway labourers | | Bakshi seeks CM’s intervention | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Dec 21 ACCUSING the sub-contractors, engaged in the construction of work on rail project at Sangaldhan, playing with the lives of the labour force and peasants, K K Bakshi, General Secretary, Centre of Indian Trade Unions,(CITU) has urged the Chief Minister to intervene in the matter and restrict the contractors and the police from taking unconstitutional measures that may lead to extra-ordinary delay in completion of the most prestigious rail project in Jammu and Kashmir. Addressing media persons here today, Bakshi alleged that the peasants have not been paid the compensation of the land acquired and taking advantage of the rampant unemployment, the contractors are exploiting the innocent labour force and treat them as ‘worst than slaves’. The CITU leader further said that the workers are denied the safety equipments thus putting their lives in danger, forced to work for 12 hours at a stretch against eight hours as per labour laws and more so whenever they raise their voice for implementation of the labour laws, they are illegally and arbitrarily terminated. He charged the contractors of using unfair labour practices, which are punishable under law. Feeling deeply concerned over the plight of the exploited workers, the CITU has urged the Chief Minister to issue instructions for immediate stoppage of police intervention in labour disputes and also the contractors to desist from taking un- constitutional measures so that this prestigious project is completed on time. Javed Zargar working President, Nirdosh Uppal, Joint Secretary, Om Parkash Treasurer, CITU, Romesh Chand Convenor Construction Federation and Mushtaq Ahmed Khan General Secretary PP USB Rail Project Workers Unit Reasi and Mohammed Khalil Naik MLA also briefed the press. |
