| Unsecured guards grope in dark | | Variou nakkaas, security points depend for light on street lights | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Dec 21 If anyone bothered about the security personal who stand all the night like ‘dripping trees in rains’ to make secure the VVIPs and VIPs and guard nakas and various security points in the winter capital after the durbar move; as majority of the check points are enveloped by darkness during late night hours in the city. It is a known fact that with the traditional durbar move the security in the winter capital is enhanced but the in the pitch dark nakaas and security points the security personal deputed seemed to be vulnerable target of the evil eyes of the anti social elements or miscreant as they are completely dependent on the natural moon light and the street lights. A simple leisure visit even within the municipal limits apparently indicate that most of the security barricades in the lack of due electrification are easy target for the miscreants. Whether it is security point at flyover or at the Civil Secretariat or at Amphalla Chowk, entrance of the city Bikram Chwok or at Manda and even Circular Road - all these security points are without proper electrification and grope in the darkness whenever there is power failure or a no moon night (amavasya). Talking to the Early Times, one junior officer told that at times it becomes difficult for the personal on duty to check the vehicles since there is no proper arrangement for the electricity at these vital points. “If anything happens odd; the security personal are blamed and are made accountable, but it becomes really tough to perform duty in absence of the electricity,” he added. “We are completely dependent on the street lights and any power failure often lands the deployment more prone and vulnerable to the evil designs of miscreants,” he said. When contacted Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jammu, Parminder Singh expressed his concerns over security of his men and said performing their duty is their job but to take care of them depends on all of us and not only on the police department because they are the ‘watch dogs’ on the miscreants. Singh added that he understood the problems in discharging strenuous duties when there is a power failure for longer hours and hence has communicated to the concerned departments to get repair the street lights, particularly on these sensitive locations. A request had been sent to the Municipality and concerned PDD officials, but there has been an undue delay for the reasons best known to the concerned, he added. However, Executive Engineer PDD, Jatinder Sharma had his own observance over the issue and told Early Times that a project to repair and maintain the street lights of the old city had been sanctioned by the government. He lamented that the delay was due to non availability of the funds from the government and added that as soon as the funds are made available, the street lights would be repaired thus resolving the problem of lights at Nakaas. |
