| This R-Day, some more water | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Dec 22 The forthcoming national day –Republic Day –is expected to prove as a good omen for the water starved residents of Jammu as they may get supply twice a day. The Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has fixed January 26, 2008 the target for completion of Sitlee filtration plant to add 70 lakh gallons of drinking water in the water supply distribution system of Jammu city. Azad as a part of his personal monitoring programme of important public utility projects visited Sitlee filtration plant and took stock of pace of progress. The project on its completion would augment water supply in the critical areas and ensure its 2-time supply per day after completion of its third intake. Another 70 lakh gallons per day would be added to the system within next six months from this plant raising the total supply of drinking water to 210 lakh gallons daily. One unit of 70 lakh gallons per day would be as a standby unit and put in operation as and when required, informed Chief Engineer PHE, Jammu Mr. V. K. Goswami. He said the plant is estimated to cost Rs. 6.54 crore the work on which is going apace. Chief Engineer said that 10 tubewells of the capacity of two lakh gallons each are also being dug to address the water supply needs in the scarce areas. The tubewells are being dug by ERA. Inspecting various components of the plant, Chief Minister also directed for carving out a beautiful water body to improve the ambience of the plant. Azad also inspected work on Rs. 39.90 crore Sidhra-Sruinsar-Mansar road upgradation project. Chief Minister directed the executing agency, ERA to complete the project within the targeted period. The ERA officials assured that the project would be completed by December next. He also inspected the construction material processing plant and the material testing lab near Sardan nallah bridge. |
