| India rules out extreme action against Pakistan | | |
New Delhi, Aug 23 India today ruled out any extreme action against Pakistan in the wake of recent spurt in terrorist activities, saying that as a mature democracy, it would rather try to resolve the tension with the neighbour than escalate it.
It, has, however, conveyed to Pakistan in clear terms that good relations with the country were conditional on the stoppage of terrorist acts, Home Minister Shivraj Patil told the Rajya Sabha.
He also said that despite Pakistan's consistent denial of any hand in terrorist activities in India and promise to check its sources on its land if any, there were no results and no signs of dismantling of terrorist camps operating from there.
The Home Minister said that India had shared some information on Mumbai blasts with Pakistan, but some information was still needed and when it was complete, it would be conveyed to the neighbour.
He was replying to questions from former External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha, Mr Manohar Joshi of the Shiv Sena, nominated Member Shobha Bharatiya and Mr Vijay Darda.
Mr Patil said the government was taking all these matters very strongly with Pakistan and at the same time, trying not to escalate the tension between the two countries.
When Mr Joshi and Mr Sinha suggested that the previous NDA Government was very harsh on Pakistan, Mr Patil sought to contradict them saying that the previous government too never wanted to severe relations with the country.
On this, Mr Sinha pointed out that, ''we had withdrawn our high commissioner.'' Mr Patil said though the NDA Government had also talked of ''Aaar Paar ki Ladai'' in the wake of the attack on Parliament, it did not actually go to any extremes. ''And I am not blaming the previous Government as what it said and did might have been right in the situation prevailing then.'' He said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had repeatedly been telling Pakistan that it could not expect good relations with India while terrorist activities sponsored from across the border continued.
