| Timely action averts communal tension, five held | | ‘People protest against alleged sacrilege acts’ | | Govind Chouhan Jammu | Dec 22 The Jammu and Kashmir Police today averted a major clash between the two different communities and took up investigations instantly over the alleged reports of sacrilegious acts at two different places. Before the tension could flare up the police acted swiftly and arrested six persons including a lady while search was on to nab four others who had gone absconding after the incidents which rocked at Beli Charana, outskirts of Jammu and Bani in Kathua, the gateway of State. Appealing people to maintain cool and not to fall pray to the machinations of the anti-social elements who wanted to flare up communal tension, the Police assured that all those involved in these acts would not be spared irrespective of their positions and status . According to reports the locals of Bani and its adjoining areas lodged a strong protest against the alleged slaughter of a cow. As soon as the news about the incident spread in the area, people in large numbers assembled in the town and started protest demonstration denouncing the sacrilege attempt and action against the accused. The protestors also torched some structures of the majority community members. Soon after the Deputy Commissioner, Kathua Sarita Chouhan, IGP Jammu Dr. Shesh Paul, DIG Jammu Range L I Mohanty and SSP JP Singh rushed to the spot to pacify the agitators and bring the situation under control. The Police had to resort to firing in air to disperse the unruly mob, however, no one was reported to have been injured in the incident. Acting swiftly, the sources claiming police sources said, that five suspects, including a lady, have been picked up for questioning while four others who have gone underground are being apprehended. The visiting officers appealed the members of both the communities to maintain peace and tranquility and assured that those involved in the act would face stern action. When contacted DC Kathua said that situation has been brought under control and additional security personnel have been deployed in the area to control any untoward incident. She said that following assurance by the administration the agitators dispersed peacefully Sources said late this evening several political parties including Shiv Sena, BJP, Bajrang Dal have given a call for Kathua Bandh tomorrow. Sources said police has also registered a case in this regard and started investigations in the matter SSP Kathua JP Singh confirmed arrest of five persons including a lady in this regard and registration of a case under Section 488-A RPC against them. He said those arrested have been identified as Mohd Rafiq son of Shri Mohd, Mohd Ishrad son of Showkat, Mohd Ashraf son of Ali Mohd, Saeema wife of Showkat Ali and Asgar Ali son of Ali Akbar, all residents of Charog Surjon, Bani. To ease tension in the area, a meeting of the prominent members of both the communities was held at late in the evening, he added. While condemning this shameful act, the elderly persons of both the communities in a joint appeal have asked the people to maintain peace, tranquility and communal amity for which the state especially Bani area is known. In yet another such act, the police had a tough time to control the agitating mob at Belicharana near Jammu Apprehending tension, senior district officers including Deputy Commissioner Jammu, Hirdesh Kumar Singh accompanied by SSP Parminder Singh rushed to the area to bring the situation under control. They appealed the people to remain cool as the Police is investigating the matter and an accused reportedly involved in the sacrilege act has been apprehended while his four other accomplice would be arrested soon. The alleged accused arrested under Section 298-A has been identified as Ishaq Ahmed son of Mohd Ali resident of Bagli, Gandoh, presently putting up at Migrant camp Beli Charana. |
