Dogri play ‘Ghumayee’ to be staged at Kerala

Dogri play ‘Ghumayee’ written and directed by Balwant Thakur is being staged at National Theatre festivals held at Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram on December 27 and 28 at Kerala. A 26 member team left today for Kerala to make Jammu proud of their language and culture.
Director Natrang terming it as one of the greatest achievements of Natrang in the last 25 years Thakur said that it has never happened that one play could make it to two national theatre events at one time. This signifies the qualitative growth Natrang has made over the years with its sheer hard work creative innovations. People have been making tall claims for their contribution to the promotion of Dogri Language but it was only due to the efforts of Natrang artists that dogri is known all over the world through its extremely powerful plays.
In Thiruvananthapuram Natrang will present Ghumayee at Tagore Theatre on 27th December in the festival which is being inaugurated by Kerala chief minister and is organized by department of cultural affairs govt. of Kerala. In Kollam top producer of Malayalam films Ravinder Nath Nair is organizing the festival in which Ghumayee will feature on 28th December.
“Ghumayee” is a play based on Dogri Folk tale of a hilly village and opens with a VIDAI scene after the solemnization of marriage an bride is being carried in a Doli to her in law’s place.
These play begins with struggle for water. The young man, putting his life in extreme danger, overcomes all hurdles and ultimately succeeds in bringing the water. As bride quenches her first, the young man falls dead, out of sheer exhaustion. In stunned atmosphere Baraties decide to continue with the journey but Dulhan refuses to do so. She declares herself a widow and cries out a wail the (Ghumayee) sanctifying the significance of human relationship over the most prized relationship of marriage bound by mere rituals.
The artists who left for Kerala included Suresh Kumar, Neeraj Kant, Sat Salarbi, Deepak Virdhi, Pankaj Sharma, Mohit Sharma, Shaban, Suraj Singh, Mukulni Sethi, Sajra Qadir, Ritu Chib, Happy Chib, Ankush Lakhnotra, Rahul Singh, Gaurav Jamwal and Mohd. Yaseen.
