| TAP pipeline: India seeks guarantees for gas volume | | | Islamabad, Aug 23 India, which is interested in joining the proposed Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan (TAP) gas pipeline project, has sought guarantees that the volume of gas contracted by it should not be disturbed if Islamabad enhances its intake.
India is seeking to incorporate special clauses in the agreement that could guarantee that gas volume contracted to India would in no circumstances be disturbed at any stage if Pakistan required higher quantities than originally contracted for, local daily 'Dawn' quoted Pakistani officials as saying.
India was apparently insisting on guarantees after Pakistan sought higher volume of gas from India-Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline project in recent months, making it difficult for one pipeline to supply the required quantity. In view of this the officials of the three countries negotiated laying down of two pipelines. India wanted to avert this eventuality in the case of TAP.
The USD seven-billion TAP pipeline for which the Asian Development Bank (ADB) is conducting a feasible study envisages development of a complete energy corridor, which includes two parallel gas and crude oil pipelines, railway track, road and optic fibre system. However, India has expressed interest in the gas pipeline only, the officials said.
India has been invited to join the project which earlier was considered to be an addition to the Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline. |
