| Varsity campus for Kathua | | Watershed in history, says Babu | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Dec 24 With more and more university campuses being established across the state to make university education affordable and within the reach of students from far-flung areas, one more campus of Jammu University is coming up at the border town of Kathua. A high level meeting in this regard discussed matters here today. The meeting was chaired by Minister of State for Youth Services and Sports Mr. Babu Singh. Various aspects including location, size and compensation mechanism were discussed threadbare in the meeting which among others was attended by Vice Chancellor Jammu University Prof. Amitabh Mattoo, Divisional Commissioner Jammu Mr. Sudhanshu Panday and Director Kathua Campus Prof. R.D. Sharma besides other senior officers. It was revealed that the infrastructure of the campus would be built by University Grants Commission (UGC) and the compensation component would be borne out by state government. It was given out in the meeting that at "Janglote", a place near Kathua on the National Highway, 200 kanals of land were secured for the purpose. The meeting also decided that a preliminary inspection would be taken up at the site on 4 th day next month which among other aspects would also sort-out modalities for securing a further 100 kanals for this mega project. Singh asserted that the establishment of the university campus in Kathua would serve as a major watershed in the academic and educational history of the people living in this gate-way town of the hill state. He said that a major chunk of students were no able to attain university education as they could not afford to go to Jammu or Punjab for receiving the same. "Azad led government has created a history of sorts by creating a rich infrastructure for education in the state besides opening a network of new schools and colleges". |
