Jammu | Dec 26
As animosity becomes history and cooperation for mutual benefit becomes the guiding principle, the Peoples Democratic Party is ruffling its feathers to make Congress understand as where its interests rest in Jammu.
After the fresh bonhomie between the warring coalition partners the Peoples Democratic Party and the Congress, the possibility of a pre-poll alliance is almost imminent. The major challenge, however, remains on the fair distribution of seats when party plunge into the electoral fray. Political observers believe that a lack of holistic understanding in distribution of seats may one again bring the Congress and the PDP face to face with each other.
To avoid any last minute decision crisis, the Peoples Democratic Party has initiated the exercise of identifying potential constituencies in Jammu region which the Congress will be asked to concede. There quite are few constituencies in Jammu region where the PDP can hold some sway but the party is all set to make tough negotiations for those seats.
While the Vijaypur seat is a foregone conclusion for the PDP to stake claim, sources said that the party is also keenly eyeing Marh constituency in Jammu district. The Vijaypur constituency is currently being held by PDP’s Manjeet Singh, who is also Minister of State for School Education and CAPD.
In March constituency the PDP is trying to make strong forays. This constituency is presently held by Ajay Sadhotra of National Conference and from Congress Balwan Singh is a strong contender. PDP is preparing to field its local activist Suram Singh in the constituency.
To make a case of tough negotiations with the Congress, the PDP has already taken up the grassroots cadre mobilization activity in the constituency. The party patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has already addressed one public meeting in Marh and it is learnt that the PDP has drawn out intensive program schedule for the coming days where the party patron and President Mehbooba Mufti are also likely to address some meetings.
Sources said that since it is generally perceived that the PDP does not have strong ground in Jammu region and therefore the Congress may it tough for the party to stake claim on the potential seats. It is with this view that the PDP is making advance forays in these constituencies to make the Congress understand that it is serious about contesting elections from there.
