| Football: Samba Club wins opening tie in Christian Gold Cup | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Dec 27 An excellent kick taken by Rahul Sambyal from 35 yards today guided Samba Club beat Ladakh Club by a solitary goal in the 2nd Christian Gold Cup football tournament which went underway at Mini Stadium Parade here this afternoon. No body had even imagined that the ball will fall into the net in the presence of an alert guard at the goal post. It was a case of clear misjudgment on part of Phunchok, who otherwise played nicely throughout the 70-minute play saving a couple of sure goal moves initiated by Samba forward line after the lemon break. The only goal of the match came in the 26th minute of the match. With today’s victory, Samba Club has reached the pre-quarterfinals stage. Now, for the quarterfinals berth, Samba will be facing the Young Heros on December 30 at 1 pm at the same venue. Had Phunchok not missed the straight ball, the match would have ended in a possible draw, the reason being both sides played an equally good game. Enjoying a good crowd support in the pavilion, Ladakh Club lacked experience. On the other hand, Samba boys seemed a bit more confident on the field and played aggressively throughout. The tournament was declared open by Minister of State for Planning and Finance, Prem Sagar Aziz, whose late arrival delayed the match by 30 minutes. Earlier, president of All J&K Christian Welfare Association, S M Gill welcomed the distinguished gathering and also presented a briefed the chief guest about the 11-day long event. Tomorrow’s fixture: Jammu United V/s R&B at 2 pm. |
