| Cong to have three working presidents | | | Early Times Special Correspondent Jammu | Dec 27 Acknowledging that the three distinct regions of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh in J&K state have vast variations, with people having different psyche, perceptions and priorities and to overcome the problem of mutual regional tensions and pulls and pressures, the All India Congress Committee is toying with the idea of appointing three working Pradesh Congress Committee Presidents, one each for Jammu region, Kashmir valley and Ladakh. The party high command at the centre has come to realize that no single leader belonging to any of the three regions can strike direct chord with the party workers, supporters and electorates at large, it has mulled the idea of having three separate regional committees of the party, whose functioning will be looked after by the respective working presidents. According to the sources the revamping of the state unit of the party has been pending with the central leadership for quite long and the same was delayed as the party wanted to have a setup which could inspire the party rank and file in all the three regions of the state. Although the Congress has a strong base in Jammu region, from where it had won 15 seats in the 2002 assembly elections, with some independent elected MLAs from the region joining the party and the party also wresting Poonch assembly seat from the National Conference, in the recently held by election, yet it is felt by the party strategists that the Congress feels handicapped in fully identifying itself with the regional aspirations of the people of Jammu and highlight the same, in view of the same not suiting the party in Kashmir valley. In contrast the BJP, which has only some pockets of influence in Jammu region alone can go to any length to stand for the aspirations and urges of the people of Jammu, without any fear of the same alienating the Kashmiris, with party having no support base at all in Kashmir valley. Still another handicap for the Congress in J&K, in projecting itself as a pro Jammu party has been its alliance with the PDP, which is perceived by the people of Jammu as Kashmir centric and even anti Jammu, it is to over come these constraints that the Congress high command is seriously thinking of setting up separate regional units, though under the overall control of the state unit. |
