When the return of Pakistan to normalcy was being keenly awaited for friendly relations with the neighbouring country, the assassination of pro-democracy leader Benazir Butto has come as huge shock for the leaders in Jammu and Kashmir.
Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has expressed profound shock on the assassination of former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Benazir Bhutto in a suicide attack in Rawalpindi today, describing the incident as a serious setback to the return of democracy in the neighbouring country.
Reacting to the tragic news that was broken in the evening today, the Chief Minister said that the killing of Benazir was not assassination of an individual but of democracy in Pakistan which would impact the politics of the sub-continent.
"We were looking forward to the return of democracy in Pakistan but the assassination of Ms Bhutto amidst election scenario is a tragic news bound to adversely affect the electoral process there", Azad said, adding that no words were enough to condemn the incident.
Strongly condemning the gory assassination of Bhutto, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has said the terrible disaster has not only struck the Bhutto family but the peace-loving people of the whole South Asian region.
In a statement issued here this evening, the PDP Patron said the heinous murder of Ms Bhutto has not only added another tragic victim to the family, but has left the whole world in general and the people of the sub-continent in particular in great shock and agony. "It is a shattering moment of great loss and mourning for the people of the region," he said and added that the time has come for all the right-thinking people in the region to take a fresh stock of the situation and work together for uprooting the scourge of violence and senseless blood-letting from the region.
Sayeed said the people of India must reach out to their brethren in Pakistan this moment of grief to strengthen the forces of peace in the region. He said since it came into being, Pakistan is, for the first time facing an existential threat from within, and New Delhi must respond to the emerging situation by making offering greater cooperation to strengthen the forces of peace in that country. "With Afghanistan already on the boil, destabilization and worsening of the security situation in Pakistan would only breed new alarming dangers in the region," he said and added that a discreet approach to the situation by New Delhi would not only signal India's positive support for Pakistan's territorial integrity but would also send to the people and the nation of Pakistan a message of goodwill.
Meanwhile, Panthers Party leader Prof. Bhim Singh, while condemning the brutal assassination of Mrs. Benazir Bhutto Pakistan's foremost political leader and the former Prime Minister termed it as most cowardice act of the terrorists and total failure of Pakistan government.
The Panthers Supremo said that she has died as an undaunted hero fighting for restoration of democracy and civil rights of the millions of people in Pakistan. She has died the way Abraham Lincoln was killed, the way Martin Luthar King was assassinated, the way Mahatma Gandhi, Mrs. Indira Gandhi or Mr. Rajiv Gandhi were assassinated by the enemies of humanity, democracy and peace.
Prof. Bhim Singh accused the Musharraf's government of its miserable failure as he himself had made commitment to the world to provide security to Mrs. Bhutto when she was attacked on her return to Pakistan the very first day.
Prof. Bhim Singh in his condolence message on behalf of the National Panthers Party has expressed shock and anger on the brutal assassination of a twinkling star of the Asian world who was seen as a symbol of peace and democracy in Pakistan by the people of all the neighbouring nations.
