Christmas Cup: Srinagar boys turn violent as Maharaja Club win 4-2

Maharaja Club registered a 4-2 victory over DFA Anantnag in a first round match of the 2nd Christmas Cup football tournament that witnessed violent scenes over some `derogatory’ remarks at Mini-Stadium Parade, here this afternoon.
Otherwise peaceful throughout the match, the Srinagar boys created scene at the fag end of the game forcing the centre referee punish four front line players with Red Cards as also a yellow card to another striker.
The height of the indiscipline on part of the players was that among those shown red card include skipper of Maharaja Club, Waseem Khan. The DFA skipper, Riyaz Ahmed, who too got struck into the scuffle, was shown yellow card by the umpire.
Everything was normal till the 50th minute of the game when Maharaja Club was leading 4-1. The remaining 20 minutes play remained disturbed for one or the other reason. Those got the Red Card punishment were Waseem Khan, Jamsheed (both Maharaja Club), Javed Ahmed and Maqsood Ahmed (both DFA Anantnag).
Earlier, Maharaja Club managed an early lead scoring the first blood in the 5th minute through Altaf Rashid, who later added second goal for the team in the 31st minute. However, DFA Anantnag reduced the margin in the 17th minute brining the score at the drinks break 2-1.
After the lemon break, Altaf struck twice to give Maharaja an unbeatable 4-1 lead netting the ball in the 45th and 48th minute of the match. However, DFA Anantnag skipper Riyaz Ahmed scored a beautiful goal in the dying minutes to bring the score to 4-2.
Meanwhile, in the first match of the day Vijay Club got walkover department team of Food and Supplies. Food and Supplies XI has become second department team after R&B which could not turn up despite confirming their entries to the organizers.
FIXTURE: Samba Club to face Young Heros at 1 pm while NGR shall take on Jammu Sports A at 2.30 pm tomorrow.
