| Wild animals cause havoc in human habitations | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | Dec 30 Facing disturbance in their own habitat the wild life animals in the valley jungles are forced to move towards the residential areas and in the past few months the trend has increased causing fear like situations in whole valley in general and frontier areas in particular. The wild life authorities blame the human interference in their habitat as the main cause. According to the Chief Wild Life warden, Farooq Geelani, more than 55 such cases have been reported in past six months in various parts of valley where the wild animals were seen in the residential areas. "Mostly black bear and leopard the Schedule- I wild animals are seen approaching towards human settlements. ‘The trend has increased in last six years,’ he said. Citing reasons for this trend the chief wild life warden said that because of the human interference the natural habitat of these animals is getting disturbed day by day, so they are moving towards the lower areas. "The forests have nothing to offer to these animals now," said Farooq Geelani. Holding people responsible for the deaths caused in such incidents, the wild life warden added that people out of excitement on seeing the wild animals make these animals irritate so they attack on people which results in deaths and injured. "Black bear is not a man eater but due human annoyance he bites the men and attacks them," he said. In the rural areas, the people in the forest areas of Kulgam and Qazigund where the bear has appeared five times in last two months and attacked many villagers, are living in the state of fear. "We are living under constant threat of the wild animals. Five people in our village have been attacked, but the authorities are unmoved," said Abdul Rashid Khan of Nuhama Kulgam. Fearing the increase in these incidents in valley, the J&K department of wild life has invited the experts from the Wild Life Institute of India (WLII) for recommendations. "The experts of Man and Animal Conflict Wing from WLII are coming here. We in collaboration with them will study the various nuances of this problem and their recommendations will help us in a great way in controlling this," said Geelani. The wild life authorities further said that they in cooperation with the district civil administrations and police have geared up to reduce the rate of these incidents and minimize their attacks. Adding that an awareness campaign has been launched to aware the people about their safety in such situations. Posters are being distributed in the rural areas and in extreme conditions people are informed by giving instructions on their mosque loudspeakers," said chief wild life warden. |
