| 50 infiltration bids foiled, 100 ultras killed | | Violence graph in J&K goes down | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | Dec 30 The overall security situation in Jammu and Kashmir has improved considerably with the number of militancy related incidents, killings of civilians and security force personnel coming down as compared to previous years. However, the Jammu and Kashmir police has sacrificed 1320 personnel during counter-insurgency operations since the eruption of militancy in early nineties. An official spokesman said the number of militancy - related incidents came down by 33 per cent during the current year and the killing of civilians by militants and in the cross - firing between security forces and ultras also registered a 59 per cent decrease. Similarly, the security force killing fell by 28 per cent over the corresponding period of the previous year. During the same period, security forces foiled more than 50 infiltration bids and killed about 100 militants immediately after they sneaked into this side from Pakistan -occupied Kashmir (PoK). However, the infiltration from across the border also decreased as compared to previous years. More than 100 militants and their families also surrendered before the security forces near the border after their return from PoK during the past two years. Security forces and police eliminated over a dozen top commanders of different militant outfits during the period. A senior police officer said 870 Jammu and Kashmir police personnel, including 450 Special Police Officers (SPO), laid down their lives in insurgency operations. It said a proposal of the state government for deployment of 5000 more Special Police Officers (PSOs) has been approved by the Centre and with this, the total number of SPOs will go up to 30,474. |
