| Police Gunda Raj: Shopkeepers forced to close business before dusk | | ‘Dampens New Year celebrations’ | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Jan 1 The shopkeepers of RS Pura suffered heavy losses on New Year eve as they were forced to close their business establishments before 6 PM last evening. According to the sources in charge Police Station RS Pura directed the shopkeepers in Bus Stand area to wind up their shops before 6 PM last evening and even manhandled some of them for defying the orders. The sudden and forcible closure of shops, much before the scheduled time, put the consumers to great inconvenience as they were busy in shopping for celebrations of the New Year. This type of ‘Police Gunda Raj’ has been viewed seriously by the shopkeepers who lodged a strong protest and demanded action against the accused police officer and alleged that the uncalled for action by the Police officer has resulted into great loss to these shopkeepers. Ramesh Lal, a local shopkeeper who runs a Dhaba in the area, told EARLY TIMES that on New Year eve ‘he was expecting heavy rush of customers but due to the dictatorial attitude of the police officer he had to suffer heavy losses’. Sources said though there were no such directions from the higher ups to close the shops before 6 PM but the said police officer enforced a new law forcing shopkeepers to close their establishments before dusk. Prabu Dayal, who runs a chicken corner, said that he also suffered heavy losses due to the closure of the shop before the normal schedule. Sources further said that in some areas of the town, this very police officer himself asked some of the selected shopkeepers to keep their establishments open till the midnight while in other areas it was curfew like situation thus dampening the spirit of the people especially the youth to celebrate the New Year. |
