| Trilochan Dutt's grandson likely to join NC | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Jan 1 After getting a tough fight from its rebel candidate Yashpal Sharma in recently held Poonch by-elections, Congress is likely to receive another setback in Jammu region as grandson of renowned Congress leader, also known as Sher-e-Jammu, Pandit Trilochan Dutt is all set to join National Conference. Vikas Dutt had joined Congress to carry forward the legacy of his grandson Pandit Trilochan Dutt, who once played a key role in strengthening the Pradesh Congress Committee. However, after working for over five years, junior Dutt is reportedly contemplating to join National Conference. Well informed sources in Congress revealed that Dutt has expressed his anguish over the treatment meted out to him by the party leadership despite of his hard work and dedication. If sources have to be believed, he has also recently held meetings with NC patron Farooq Abdullah and President Omar Abdullah regarding his willingness to join the party. "If the things go as it seems Dutt may join NC in coming few days", a party leader said, on the condition of anonymity. Though junior Dutt is not an acclaimed politician till now, observes believe that his joining NC would boost the part circles in Jammu as he carry the name of his grandfather with him. Says a political observer, "It is certainly going to help the NC in Jammu and its suburbs as Pandit Trilochan Dutt is a political celebrity of his time and is highly respected in political and social circles of the region". Pandit Trilochan Dutt was a known freedom fighter, who founded Congress Organisation in Jammu in 1937-38 and then converted it into National Conference immediately after the latter's conversion from Muslim Conference. He was inducted as Secretary to Government Ministry of Rehabilitation and Health in the government of Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah in March, 1948. However, he resigned in 1950. After his reentry into politics he remained as Member Parliament from 1954 to 60. He was again elected to the Legislative Assembly in 1962 from Bishnah Constituency and was returned MLA from Jammu Cantonment in 1967 and 1972. In 1965, Trilochan Dutt resigned again to build up the NC on its conversion into Congress. Though he was elected again and remained minister, he resigned and join Congress in 1966. He was elected as general secretary J&K PCC and was re-inducted into the State Cabinet by G.M. Sadiq in 1971 because of the after-math of 1971 war. He was re-elected member J&K Legislative Assembly in 1972 and was appointed as Minister I/C Revenue, Forest and Agricultural Production. However, once again he resigned in 1973 from the Cabinet headed by Mir Qasim and was leader of the dissident group of the Congress Legislature Party. |
