Kashmir Festival gets off to a colourful start

The Annual Kashmir Festival got off to a colourful start here yesterday evening at Dilli Haat with Union Minister of State for Commerce, Jairam Ramesh inaugurating the event. Departments of Handicrafts, Tourism and Information & Public Relation are jointly organizing the two-week long festival.
Present on the inauguration were Minister for Industries, Nawang Rigzin Jora, Minister of State for Industries Dr. Ramesh Chander, senior officers of the state government and hundreds of Handicraft unit holders besides a large number of people who relished the varieties put on display in crafts, food and music.
Interacting with the stall holders on the occasion. Jairam Ramesh said the objective of the center and state governments has been that the basic artisan community is benefited to the maximum in this Rs. 1200 crores export oriented Industry. He hoped the unit holders would also rise to this social responsibility adding that he was happy to see few stalls set up by self help groups.
In all about 191 craft unit holders have put up their stalls in the festival putting on display diverse varieties of art from Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. People were seen relishing the food delicacies put up by JKTDC at their stall. A prominent feature of the festival this year is the documentation of developmental activities undertaken in the state by the Department of Information. Publications like Era of Infrastructure Development, Danchagat Vikaas Kay Dou Saal, Taraqi kay Tareekhsaaz Dou Saal and documentary film Taraqi Kay Dou Saal provided a ready reckoner to a captivating audience.
Earlier, in the day, Jairam Ramesh also inaugurated the Kashmir Handicraft Expo-2008 at Baba Kharak Singh Marg in which he stressed the need for permanent marketing center for Kashmiri Handicrafts in the capital. He said the central government has identified 20 kanals of land for developing a marketing and exhibition center of Kashmir handicraft crafts.
