| Pak-trained ultra gets 18 years in jail | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Jan 3 A local court today sentenced a Pakistan-trained militant to 18 years in prison, seven years after he was arrested along with an accomplice for infiltrating into Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir. Principal sessions judge J R Kotwal convicted and sentenced Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) trained militant Raja Muzaffar Ahmed to undergo 18 years of imprisonment under diffderent Acts after hearing the arguments of public prosecutor E A Tak appearing for the state and the defence counsel Dinesh Verma. The offence committed by the accused was 'serious' as well as 'heinous' and he did not deserve 'leniency', the court observed before convicting him. The court sentenced the accused to undergo imprisonment for 8 years under the Enemy Agent Ordinance and for five years each under sections 4 and 5 of the Explosive Substances Act. Another accused, Bilal, who was arrested along with Muzaffar, was convicted last year in connection with this case. The two had been arrested on May 1, 2000, for infiltrating into Kathua district along the Indo-Pak border and maps of Hiranagar sector, railway line, National Highway and nullahs and a pistol along with loaded magazine was recovered from their possession. Disclosures made by these militants had led to the recovery of a large cache of arms and ammunition in the valley. |
