| Christmas Cup: Second semi-final ends in a dispute | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Jan 4 The second semi-final of the 2nd Christmas Cup Football Tournament between Young Star and Jammu Sports ended in a dispute over umpire’s decision today. To decide the fate of the crucial match, the final decision shall be taken by the organising committee tomorrow morning. Only eight minutes game was remaining with Young Star leading by one goal when all of a sudden a big crowd entered the field reacting to an umpire’s decision. Alleged denial of a `penalty’ for `doubtful handball’ on the goal mouth was what irked the Jammu Sports supporters, who not only entered the field in big number disturbing the game but also slapped the centre referee, Farooq Ahmed. Angry over the behaviour of the crowd, the match officials left the field only to return after repeated requests from the organizers, All J&K Christian Welfare Association. However, Jammu Sports skipper when asked by the umpires to resume the game by taking a corner kick instead of penalty, he straightway refused and continue to sit in the field till the umpire declared the game over. It was followed by shouting of slogans by supporters and team members of Jammu Sports against Jammu and Kashmir Football Association and the officials. The dispute came to an end only when police asked the organizers to leave the venue and dispersed the mob. The umpires who left the field finding the Jammu Sports supporters in an angry mood are yet to submit their report to the organizers. “The umpires shall be submitting their view point to the organizing committee tomorrow morning,” chief referee of the tournament, Nasir Ahmed told SAN. When contacted the president of the organizing committee, S M Gill said that he was waiting for the umpires’ report. “We are waiting for the umpires’ reports and as and when the report is submitted with the organizing committee, a final decision on the semi-final shall be taken. Hopefully, we will be able to come to the conclusion by tomorrow morning,” said SM Gill. Meanwhile, secretary of the Young Star, Shiv Paul Sharma has straightway refused for any kind of replay tomorrow ahead of the final on January 6. On the other hand, the secretary of the Jammu Sports, David Masih was of the views that the boys should have played the remaining game obeying the umpires. |
