Representatives of various markets and trade associations along with the members called on president, Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Ram Sahai today to express concern over the trend of allowing mega retail marts in the city. They apprised him about the big chains of retail trade which are the source of unfair business against the retailers and small shopkeepers as these types of retail outlets undertake monopoly or business mostly of un standard and unbranded products whereas the local existing business houses are governed by controlled prices system and some discipline .
They alleged these mega marts sell the unstandard or self procured items on their own fixed rates without taking quality into consideration. It was also alleged that these mega retail outlets create lot of traffic problems also they do not have any proper space for parking.
The members urged upon Sahai to take up the entire issue with the concerned authorities so that the large number of shopkeepers and their employees involved in retail business in their premises do not fall prey to their monopolies. Moreover it seems as if shops establishment act and I about act does no apply to them.
Members also expressed their apprehension that the future plans of extending rail line upto Katra and opening of Mughal roads is likely to hit the small traders very badly whose livelihood depend mostly on the pilgrims tourists and other commuters coming from Rajouri, Poonch area for going towards they valley in case the opening of these mega retail outlets is not stopped the problem of traders will assume a grave situation. Members were highly agitated over the issue and will launching a protest stir against these big retail outlets.
Sahai while appreciating the concern said that he has already taken up matter with the state government to formulate a sustainable consistent policy with regard establishment of malls and multiplex, which is very necessary to keep pace with the modern trend of other states. He also promised that he will take up the issue with higher authorities more vigorously so that the trend of mega outlets is discouraged and the small shopkeepers do not get affected.
